Frequently Asked Questions

What if I'm not formally diagnosed?

It is enough to identify as neurodivergent.
I understand the challanges of obtaining a diagnosis and do not want to add an additional barrier    Your learning experiences are still valid and worth exploring

Is it confidential?

As medics, I think we can agree that maintaining trust, and upholding confidentiality is of paramount importance.  Whilst your name, and some demographic information is collected initially, once the interview has been transcribed all patient identifiable information will be removed from the data. So whilst a direct quote from you may appear in a research paper (or my thesis!), no one would know it was you except us both.

What if I change my mind

You are allowed to change your mind!

There's a 72 hour cooling off period after your interview, so if for whatever reason, or no specific reason at all, you change your mind - then just email me and I'll make all of your data disappear forever. No questions asked.

How long is the interview?

I recommend blocking out 90 minutes, and I anticipate interviews will range between 30 - 90 minutes. Some may be slightly shorter or longer, as each conversation will be slightly different. But my aim is to try to keep to time, whilst also giving you space to share your experience in a way that feels comfortable for you.

What are you going to ask me?

Don't fret, as I will send you a copy of the topic guide ahead of time, so you can have a read through and think about the questions (or you can ignore it, if you prefer).

Remember - it is a guide and not a script, and I may go on tangents to explore something interesting you have said

Are there any risks?

There is no risk of physical harm.

The conversation could might bring up uncomfortable feelings about sensitive topics. There is a risk you might feel distressed during our conversation, or perhaps more likely, after the conversation has ended.

I will offer signposts as we enter into new topics. You have the option to pause or stop the interview at any time. You can also skip any questions or topics you don't want to discuss.

Whilst it can be difficult to predict how you might feel on the day, I have some tips under the resources page on things you may want to incorporate to help you take good care of yourself. I do recommend doing the interview at a time when you have no other clinical commitments for the day.
