Frequently Asked Questions

What if I'm not formally diagnosed?

A formal diagnosis of a neurodivergent condition is required to participate in this study. Unfortunately, individuals who do not currently have a diagnosis are not eligible to take part.

Is it confidential?

Yes. Your privacy is extremely important to me.

Some personal information will be collected at the start of the study, but anything that could identify you will be removed from your interview transcript. While quotes from your interview may be used in my thesis or future publications, but you won't be identifiable from the information shared.

Confidentiality would only be broken in exceptional circumstances where there are concerns about your safety or the safety of others.

What if I change my mind

You are allowed to change your mind.

There is a 72 hour 'cooling off' period after your interview is complete. So if for whatever reason, or for no reason at all, you change your mind, email the Principal Investigator and all of your data will be permanently deleted. You will not be treated negatively for withdrawing, nor do you need to give a reason for withdrawing.

After 72 hours, your interview transcript will be anonymised and can no longer be linked to you. For this reason, it will no longer be possible to remove your data from the study.

How long is the interview?

It is recommended that 90 minutes is blocked out for the interview.

The interview may range from 30 - 90 minutes. Some may be slightly shorter or longer, as each conversation will be slightly different. The aim it to keep within this time slot, whilst also giving you space to share your experience in a way that feels comfortable for you.

What are you going to ask me?

You will receive a copy of the topic guide at least 48 hours before the interview so you can familiarise yourself with the topic we will explore. You may choose to reflect on your own experiences ahead of the interview. It is equally ok to not read it ahead of time if you prefer.

Remember - it is a guide and not a script, and the interview may explore new areas of interest depending on what if shared

Are there any risks?

There is no risk of physical harm.

The interview could might bring up uncomfortable feelings about sensitive topics. There is a risk you might feel distressed during our conversation, or perhaps more likely, after the conversation has ended.

I will offer signposts as we enter into new topics. You have the option to pause or stop the interview at any time. You can also skip any questions or topics you don't want to discuss.

Whilst it can be difficult to predict how you might feel on the day, I have some tips under the resources page on things you may want to incorporate to help you take good care of yourself. I do recommend doing the interview at a time when you have no other clinical commitments for the day.
